Date: 2004
Location: European Bakery at Leigh Square [map]
Dimensions: 33’6″ w x 14’7″ h (plus triangular upper section)
Information: The theme for The Salmon Cycle came out of a community-engaged wood relief project for the Port Coquitlam Recreation Centre, and from studies and research carried out by the Hyde Creek Hatchery. The mural follows the evolution of salmon’s life cycle, starting from the left, as eggs, fry, fingerlings, smolt and mature salmon. The fish ladder is portrayed in an underwater perspective, with a large spawning salmon arching over the entire wall. A cut out relief wood crow frieze was added to the upper part of the front wall. Behind this wall, on the second story of the adjacent building, the upper part of a female figure, flanked by natural forms, becomes the ‘source’ for the river. The mural projects both the life force and the fragility of this ecosystem, giving spectators a close-up perspective of the local hatchery and salmon.
