Artists: Bert Monterona with extensive community engagement
Date: December 11, 2009
Location: On the Shaughnessy Street Underpass [map]
Information: This mural is one of 8 murals created by Bert Monterona as Port Coquitlam’s contribution to the Necklace Project. Monterona established a comprehensive plan for community engagement, leading workshops with youth and community residents over four months. The workshops were multi-layered in their purpose, developing community pride, artistic skills and social awareness. The murals enhance the main gateway to the City’s downtown and provide a deterrent for vandalism. The eight murals provoke thoughts on peace, environment, gender equality, diversity, active living and heroism.
The Necklace Project is an inter-municipal collaboration in 10 municipalities throughout Metro Vancouver. It incorporates 10 public art projects threaded together as individual jewels on a necklace of common purpose. Revealing an inner light of each community – its history, its diversity or a truth of its underlying nature, exceptional in day and night, each work is integral to its strategically selected site.
